Could iPhone images of crushed, discarded aluminum cans be seen as portraits of a cycle of life? Do these images remind us how we care for our planet? In the past year I have adopted an archetypal spiral pattern to reflect a personal trajectory of self-directed use of time and acceptance of responsibility. A dear friend recently taught me more about the spiral, making my use of the symbol more relevant than I had ever imagined. For centuries indigenous people of the Andes have named the spiral pachamama, meaning Mother Earth. When I layer pachamama into views of refuse found on or near sidewalks, streets, and gutters, I hope to encourage a greater respect for materials in the world we live in.
